Anna's STATEment on Thrifting

When one thinks of the buying clothing, shoes or accessories at a thrift store, their first thoughts are usually, "Ew, it smells funny in here," or "Why would anyone have EVER worn that?" But trust me, amidst the funny smells, the tattered furniture, and the garish 80's clothing, there are some undiscovered gems. Last spring I found the perfect high-rise men's style slacks popular on the runways of ChloƩ and DKNY at our local Palmer Home Thrift Store, and just last weekend I found these adorable brogues there as well:

As seen on the runways in Vera Wang's Lavendar Label, and on the feet of celebrities such as Alexa Chung, Sienna Miller, Emma Watson, and Kate Bosworth, these chic (and practical) shoes are an amazing find. I have been wanting a pair of brogues for months, and I could barely find a pair under $500! At $3,50, these are a true steal.

My virtual version of thrifting comes in the form of Ebay. There you can scour hoards of vintage listings for beautiful handbags, shoes, and dresses. For instance take this early 80's Dooney and Bourke bag:

I scored this bag for $15. This bag's chic structured elements and long over the shoulder straps make this Dooney as fashionable today as it was in 1980. Plus, you save a good $200 on a brand new Dooney and Bourke, while scoring some style points.

Lastly, I would like to share some of my best tips for thrifting:

First, LOOK-You have to look at these thrift stores to even have a chance of finding anything. You have no hope of finding any hidden gems if you never step in your local thrift store.
and
Then have PATIENCE-You will not find something every time you stop at the thrift store. Just know what you're looking for and always keep an eye out for it. Thrifting's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.
