Anna's STATEment on Thrifting

When one thinks of the buying clothing, shoes or accessories at a thrift store, their first thoughts are usually, "Ew, it smells funny in here," or "Why would anyone have EVER worn that?" But trust me, amidst the funny smells, the tattered furniture, and the garish 80's clothing, there are some undiscovered gems. Last spring I found the perfect high-rise men's style slacks popular on the runways of ChloƩ and DKNY at our local Palmer Home Thrift Store, and just last weekend I found these adorable brogues there as well:

As seen on the runways in Vera Wang's Lavendar Label, and on the feet of celebrities such as Alexa Chung, Sienna Miller, Emma Watson, and Kate Bosworth, these chic (and practical) shoes are an amazing find. I have been wanting a pair of brogues for months, and I could barely find a pair under $500! At $3,50, these are a true steal.

My virtual version of thrifting comes in the form of Ebay. There you can scour hoards of vintage listings for beautiful handbags, shoes, and dresses. For instance take this early 80's Dooney and Bourke bag:

I scored this bag for $15. This bag's chic structured elements and long over the shoulder straps make this Dooney as fashionable today as it was in 1980. Plus, you save a good $200 on a brand new Dooney and Bourke, while scoring some style points.

Lastly, I would like to share some of my best tips for thrifting:

First, LOOK-You have to look at these thrift stores to even have a chance of finding anything. You have no hope of finding any hidden gems if you never step in your local thrift store.
and
Then have PATIENCE-You will not find something every time you stop at the thrift store. Just know what you're looking for and always keep an eye out for it. Thrifting's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

Anna's STATEment on Project Runway

The show we thought may be kept eternally in lawsuits and the cable abyss between Bravo and Lifetime has finally made its return.

WELCOME BACK PROJECT RUNWAY!

Let's just say I am personally insanely excited about this season, it looks like they've got a lot of great designers for us to choose from!

My Personal Red Carpet favorite comes to us from Althea:

I love this gown because it's elegant and classic, with enough frilly embellishments on the
bodice to set it apart from your average black red carpet dress. To try and make this post relevant to college fashion, this gown would be darling at a formal and for those you still in high school definitely remember this when it comes time for prom.

This Cocktail Dress from Gordana definitely makes the cute and adorable cut:

This dress is perfect for cocktails, a tea party, an afternoon wedding, or anything that's just a little bit dressy. This cute frock is both sweet and sassy.

Looking for a bit of Gordana's style in your own closet? Check out this dress by Twelve by Twelve at Forever 21:

And let's not forget the winner Christopher:

As Michael Kors said, this look is a unique mix of "cute and edgy". This dress is also perfect for any slightly formal occasion you may have.

Looking for a bit of Christopher in your wardrobe? Try this cute tiered number from Twelve by Twelve at Forever 21:

Is it just me or does this look like Project Runway is in for a great season? Let's hope it was worth the wait!

New Year, New You

Welcome one, welcome all to Fashion STATEment, I'm Anna and I'm here to prove that there is such a thing as "fashion" on college campuses. Every day I will feature a fabulously dressed, real-girl found on the Mississippi State campus.

I'm sure we've all seen this outfit more times than we'd care to in our entire lives:

This look is what my friends and I call "unforch" (unfortunate if you're not familiar). There are two reasons why this look is "unforch". ONE: This look is sloppy. It is not appropriate to dress this way unless you are going to the gym. TWO: Everyone else is wearing this. YOU are an individual and you should dress to express yourself.

Here is an example of an outfit that is cute, fun, chic, and comfortable.

My roomate and I (the beautiful model Caroline) timed how long both of these looks took to pull together. Look One took 3 minutes, while the infinitely more fabulous and unique Look 2 took 5 minutes. Now I know we can all take two extra minutes in the morning to look and feel better all day. I'm sure, dear reader, that your second thought is "How much will it cost to look this fabulous?" In fact, you will actually save money on the the more fabulous second look; it's total cost is about $79 while the "unforch" look is around $135! That is definitely more bang for your buck.

How does one accomplish this on a daily basis? Look no further than fashion STATEment's simple tips to effortlessly chic dressing:
1. Have go to outfits. If you are experiencing "dresser's" block on what to wear, make sure you have a few tried and true outfits that you can slip on at a moment's notice. Picking out these outfits is always something fun to do on a slow night. Think of the hallway in your dorm as your runway.
2. Cute basics are a must. Comfortable and well-fitted shorts, jeans, cardigans, and colorful v-necks are a must. Trust me, they are just as easy to throw on as those nike shorts and oversized polos.
3. Chic flats are the fashionable college girl's staple. Just as comfortable as running shoes, these adorable flats can take your style the extra mile.

And I will leave you with this fashionistas of Mississippi State, I'll be on campus searching for fabulously dressed girls to feature on fashion STATEment, so make sure to put your most stylish foot forward.
